CARCINOMAS OF DUCTAL ORIGIN Flashcards
80-90% of all ductal type tumors; 28,000 new cases/year
one of the top 5 causes of deaths in developed countries
metastasize to bile duct, stomach, liver
smoking, high fat intake
jaundice, pain, rapid weight loss
develop in head of pancreas
60% in the head, difficult to distinguish from fibrosing chronic pancreatitis
ductal adenocarcinoma
mucinous non cystic
pools of mucin > 50% tumor
associated with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms and mucinous cystic neoplasms
M=F
mean age 61
5-year survival 55%
colloid carcinoma
2% of all pancreatic cancers
more prevalent in the tail
pure squamous cancer is very rare
M:F=2:1; mean age 65
worse prognosis-medial survival 6 months
-ductal most common type
adenosquamous carcinoma
poorly differentiated cells, pushing borders
inflammatory infiltrate
prognosis similar to ductal adenocarcinoma
medullary carcinoma
sarcomatous spindle cell
anaplastic giant cell
usually body/tail
very poor prognosis
undifferentiated carcinoma
