TERMS Flashcards
retroperitoneal structure, transitional epithelium (only place in the body)
urinary bladder
out pouching of the bladder wall between a weak site in crisscrossing muscle bundles; more commonly seen as an acquired deformity in older adults
diverticulum
rare developmental failure in the anterior wall of the abdomen and the bladder
exstrophy
a cystitis usually caused by colonic bacteria like E. coli, Proteus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter
this one is found in middle eastern countries along the Nile river valley?
infectious cystitis
Schistosoma haematobium
a cystitis that results secondarily from medical therapy
hemorrhagic cystitis
cystitis caused by radiation of the bladder region
radiation cystitis
inflammation of the bladder wall rather than the surface
interstitial cystitis
macrophages phagocytize bacteria and form raised mucosal plaques (dimples appearing on surface of bladder packed with macrophages containing bacteria)
malakoplakia
benign, rare epithelial lesion which grows into lumen of bladder
transitional cell papilloma
benign, rare epithelial lesion which grows into bladder wall making papilla more microscopic; appears like raised plaque inside bladder
inverted papilloma
90% most common bladder cancer
transitional cell carcinoma
tube extending from urinary bladder out of the body, short in women, longer in men as it travels through the prostate and penis resulting in more surface area of abnormalities; urethral disorder more common in men
urethra
opening on the ventral surface
hypospadias
opening on dorsal surface
epispadias
an abnormally small orifice in the prepuce preventing retraction of foreskin over the glans penis
phimosis
