Chapter 25: MNT in Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease (Hyperlipidemia) Flashcards
is the elevation of plasma lipids, sometimes called hyperlipoproteinemia
hyperlipidemia
hyperlipidemia is also known as
hyperlipoproteinemia
lipoproteins - classes
highest lipid content; lowest density, composed of TGs, synthesized in the intestinal wall and acted as transport TG in the blood and after a meal; cleared from the blood through the action of lipoprotein lipase
chylomicrons
lipoproteins - classes
largely made up of TG, with 10-15% cholesterol; formed in the liver
Very LDL (VLDL)
lipoproteins - classes
continues delivery of TG to cells; carry about 30% cholesterol
IDL
lipoproteins - classes
formed in the blood from the catabolism of VLDL; carries 2/2 or more cholesterol to the cells
aka bad cholesterol
LDL
lipoproteins - classes
carry less total lipid and more carrier protein; carry cholesterol from tissued to the liver for catabolism and excretion
aka good cholesterol
HDL
