Structure of the human heart Flashcards
What is the heart made from?
= cardiac muscle
= consists of 4 chambers
What are the top and bottom chambers called?
= left + right atrium
= left + right ventricle, ventricles have a thicker muscle compared to the atrium
How are atrium seperated from the ventricles?
= atrioventricular valves
= left; bicupsid valve
= right: tricupsid valve
What do the tendious cords do?
= make sure valves open in the right direction
What is the septum?
= how the left and right sides of the heart are seperated
= prevents blood passing directly between the 2 sides of the heart
What happens to deoxygenated blood?
= enters the right atrium through the vena cava- has 2 branches, superiod from the upper parts of body, inferior from lower parts
= pumped from right atrium to right ventricle- pumps deoxuganetd blood out of the heart ro the lungs by pulmonary artery
=
What happens to oxygenated blood?
= in the lungs the blood becomes oxygenated
= returns from the lungs to the heart- pumonary vein
= brings into left atrium and passes into left ventirlc,e pumps blood out of aorta
= transfers oyxgenated blood into the body
Do right and left side of the heart contract at the same time?
= yes
why does the left ventricle have a thicker muscular wall than right?
- left pumps blood around whole body
= right pumps blood to lungs
WHat is the purpose of the coronary artery?
= carries oxygen and glucose
= to heart muscles
