Cell Division: Stages of mitosis Flashcards
What are the 4 stages of mitosis called?
= Prophase
= Metaphase
= Anaphase
= Telophase
What happens during prophase?
= chrosomes condense- becomes visible in the nucleus
= nucleolous dissapears
= nuclear membrane breaks down
= a pair of centrioles move to either pole of the cell
= proteins begin to form spindle fibres attach to the centromere of each chromosome
=move the chromosomes to the centre of the cell
=
What happens in metaphase?
= spindle apparatus has completly formed
= chromosomes are lined up at the centre or equator of the cell
=
What happens in anaphase?
= centromere’s divide in 2
= spindle fibres shorten
= pulls sister chromatids at opposite poles
=
What happens in telophase?
= chromatids have reached the poles of the cells (chromosomes)
= spindle apparatus breaks down
= nucleur membranes reform
= chromosomes uncoil back to their chromatin state
= nucleous repears in each nucleus
=
What happens in cytokenesis?
= central cell membrane is pulled inwards by the cytoskeleton
= creates a groove that gradually deepends
= membranes fuse to form 2 independant cells
What is the mitotic index?
= number of cells in mitosis
/ totoal number of cells
x 100
