Microscopy: Flashcards
What is magnification?
= how many times bigger an image appears under the microscope
What is resolution?
= Smallest distance that 2 objects can be apart while appearing as 2 objects.
What is a light microscope?
= Uses light and leses to form a image of the specimen.
What are the advantages of a light microscope?
=Cheap
=Easy to use
= Study living cells
What are the disadvantages of a light microscope?
= Provides 2d imagery
= uses visible light to create images
= poor resolution- limited by the wavelength of light- longer wavelength
=
What is an electron microscope?
= Uses electrons and lenses to form an image of the specimen
What are the advantages of using a electron microscope?
= 3d imagery
= higher resolution- not limited by the wavelength of light
=
What are the disadvantages of using an electron microscope?
= has to be done in a vaccum, dead cell
= needs to be thin
= requires heavy staining
