Lipid Digestion & Absorption Flashcards
Where is lipase produced?
= pancreas
= hydrolyses ester bonds in triglycerides
= forms monoglycierdes and fatty acids
What are bile salts?
= formed in liver
= emulsify lipids- forms tiny droplets micelles
= increases syrface area for lipase
What is a micelle?
= vesicle containing:
= fatty acids
= glyceroel
= monoglycerides
= bile salts
How do micelles help with lipid absorboptuon?
= make fatty acids (non-polar), more soluable in water
= carry the fatty acids to epithelial cells of the lumen of the illuem
= maintains a high concenreation of fatty acids- groups fatty acids together
= fatty acids are released from the micelle and enter epithelial cells by simple diffusion
Why do fatty acids enter by simple diffusion?
= non-polar lipid soluable
= dissolce abd diffuse through phosphollipid bilaer
=
What happens once lipids are in the cell what happens?
= fatty acids + monoglycerides
= modified back into triglycerides
= inside endoplasmatic recticulm
= or golgi apparatus- if protein is added make chylomicron
How do modified lipids leave the epithelial cells?
= vesicles containing the troglycertide are released and move towards cell membrane
= fuse will cell mebrane and releaed by exocytosis
= enter lacteal and transpirted around
