Q

What kind of surface area to volume ratio does fish have?

A

= small, so requires a gas exchange system, this is the gills

Q

What is an adaptation that the fish has?

A

= fish obtain oxygen from water, but there is less oxygen compared to air, so need to maintain a concentration gradient

Q

What are the gills of a fish/anatomy?

A

= 4 layers of gills, both sides of their head
= gills are made of stacks of gill filaments, alligned in stacks
= each gill filament has gill lamelle, positioned at right angles to the filaments
= creates a large surface area

Q

What flow does water flow in?

A

= when fish open their mouth water rushes in and over the gills and out through a hole inside the hell

Q

How is a large surface area to ovlume ratio formed?

A

= many gill fillaments, covered in many gill lamelle
= short diffusion distance: cappilary network close to the outside , gas exchange only happen on lamelle, thin cells
= maintained concentration gradient- counetrcurent

Q

What is a counter current?

A

= water flowing over gills flows in opposite direction to the blood flowing in the cappilaries
= equalibrian is never reached
diffusion can occur across the length of the lamelle,

= the blood is flowing in opposite direction, already very oxygenated, diffusion from oxggen to water to blood occurs
