Enzymes: Competitive inhibitor Flashcards
What are competitive inhibitors?
= similar structure to substrate- can bind to the active site
= NO reaction happens
= after short time it leaves the active site
What happens when it occupies the active site for a period of time?
= prevents actual substrate from binding
= frequence of collisions between substrate and active site are reduced
= reduces rate of reaction
=
How can we reduce the effect of a competitive inhbitor?
= increasing substrate concentration
What does an increased substrate look like on a graph?
= rate increases as substrate concentration increases
= certain point: does not increase any further, all active sites are occupied so rate is at maxiumn
= maximum vmax
What are irreversible competitive inhibitors?
= bind permantely to the active site
= cannot reverse the effect by increasing substrate concentration
