Chloroplasts: Flashcards
What are chloroplasts?
= Organelles were photosynthesis takes place.
What happens during photosynthesis?
= energy from light used to react carbon dioxide with water to form oxygen and glucose
= energy trapped from photosynthesis is contained within the chemical bonds within the glucose molecule
What is the membrane of chloroplast like?
= double membrane
= controns the molecules that enter and leave the chloroplast.
What are thylakoids?
= membrane-bound flatened discs
= where light dependant reactions take place
= contains chlorophyll and enzymes needed for light dependant reactions
What is a stack of thylakoids called?
= granum
How does stacking the thylakoids make an influence?
= light can be absorbed more efficiently
How are thylakoids on different granum connected to eachother?
= flatenned membranes
= lamelle
= plays a role in light dependant reaction by allowing chemicals to pass between the granums
What is the fluid called?
= stroma
= light independStrant reactions take place
= contains the enzymes for light independant reactions
What is starch stored in the chloroplasts as?
= starch granules
What else does chloroplasts contain?
= loop of dna
= contains genes for encoding of proteins needed for photosynthesis
= ribosomes
