Membrane Proteins: Flashcards
What 2 categories can we divide membrane proteins into?
= instrinsic- integral proteins
= extrinsic- peripheral proteins
=
What are instrinsic proteins?
= fully embedded into the membrane from one side to the other
= pass through the lipid bilayer- have hydrophobic amino acids on the outside surface of the protein
= can interact with the hydrophobic fatty acids tails in the phospholipid
What are the 2 types of instrinsic proteins?
= protein channel
= carrier protein
What is a protein channel ?
= contain a channel through the centre
= lined with hydrophilic amino acids
= filled with water molecules
= allow water soluable molecules + ions to diffuse through
What are carrier proteins?
= can change their shape + position
= to transfer molecules or ions from one side of the membrane to another
What are extrinsic proteins?
= do not spam the membrane
= found on one side of the membrane or the other
= sometimes attached to intrinsic proteins
What are the functions of extrinsic proteins?
= structural role
= act as enzymes
= receptors
=
What do many membrane proteins contain?
= carbohydrate molecule attached- glycoproteins
What are the functions for glycoproteins?
= allow cells to attach to eachother
= play a role in the immune systems
= act as receptors for hormones
Where else can carbohydrates also be found attached to?
= phospholipid molecules
= glycolipids
= used when cells come into contact with eachother- glyclopids of one cell can be recognised by another cell deter, ine whether cells come into contact
= antigens
