Osmosis + Water potential: Flashcards
What can easily pass through a partially permeable membrane and cannot?
= water molecules can pass freely
= solute cannot- fixedn
What is Osmosis?
= movement of water molecules from a region of high water potential and a region of lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane
What is water potential?
= water molecules collide with the membrane and these collisions means the water molecules apply pressure to the cell membrane
What happens at an equaliberian?
= osmosis stops
= water molecules will still move across the membrane but the same number will move in both direction
= net movement 0
What is the highest possible water potential?
= pure water
= 0 kPA
= water potential of any solution has to be < than 0
= negative
