Antibodies@ Flashcards
What is an antibody?
= protein that is complementary and specific to a particular antigen
What is the structure of antibodies?
= made from heavy and light chains with variable regions
= rest is constant region
= made from 4 polypeptide chains
=
What are the variable regions based on?
= sequence of amino acids that determines the bonding in the protein
= different antibodies have different variable regions that is complememtary to a particular antigen
When an antigen binds to the antibody what is this called?
= antibody-antigen complex
= when variable region of an antibody is bound to a specific antigen
What effect is agglutination when the antigen binds?
= bacteria cells become clumped together and acts as markers for phagocytosus
What else can antibodies do?
= nuetralise toxins
= distract pathogens
