Biological Molecules:Phospholipids. Flashcards
1
Q
What is the structure of a phospholipid molecule?
A
= a glyceroel is bonded to 2 fatty acid molecules (hydrophobic) and phosphate
2
Q
What charge does phosphate have?
A
= Negative charge
= hydrophilic
= attracts water and other groups of sugars
3
Q
How do phospholipids act in water?
A
= phospholipids position themselves
= hydrophilic head groups can interact with water molecules
= hydrophobic tails cluster together away from the water molecules
= phospholipid bilayers.
4
Q
What is the function of phospholipid bilayers?
A
= forms the cell membrane.
5
Q
What charge do the fatty acid molecules have?
A
= non polar
= hydrophobic- repels water
