ATP: Flashcards
Why is ATP needed?
= cells need a way to transfer energy from a glucose molecule into smaller useful amounts
What is the structure of ATP?
= 3 phosphate heads
= ribose sugar
= adenine
= ADENOSINE
= takes a small amount of energy to break the covalent bond holding the last phosphate head in place
What happens when this bond is broken?
= a great deal of energy is released
= used by processes in cell
What is the ATP hydrolosis?
ATP + water=
= catalysed by the enzyme ATPase
= forms ADP, phosphate group,
What kind of energy source is ATP?
= immediate energy source
= from the site of respiration to the parts of the cell that require energy
What happens to ADP + phosphate head?
= recylcled back to ATP
= respiration in animal cells and respiration and photosynthesis in plant cells
What is it a phosphorylation reaction?
= adding phosphate back into ADP
= catalysed by the ezzyme ATP synthase
= condensation reaction
