Biological Molecules: Amino Acids. Flashcards
How many different amino acids are there?
= 20 different.
What is the structure of amino acids?
= amine group (H2N)
= carboxyl group (COOH)
= SAME
R group: is different for each amino acid.
What elements are amino acids made from?
= carbon
= hydrogen
= nitrogen
= oxygen
= some contains sulfur.
When 2 amino acids react together what happens?
= form an peptide bond
= molecule of water
= condensation
=
What is the molecule called made from 2 amino acid molecules?
= Dipeptide
Where does the condensation reaction for amino acids take place?
= Ribosomes.
= catalused by a specific enyzme
If we join 3 or more amino acids what is the molecule called?
= Polypeptide.
= often contains 100’s of bonds
How do we break the peptide bond?
= add a molecule of water
= carried out by protease
How does the polpeptideclassify as a protien?
= polypeptide has to fold into a complex 3x dimensional shape
= it can carry irs function
What can protiens contain?
= conist of several different polypeptides
= forms large + complex molecules
= contain other molecules
