Biological Molecules: Monosaccharides Flashcards
What do ALL carbohydrates contain?
= ONLY 3 ELEMENTS
= Carbon + Hydrogen + Oxygen.
What is a hexose sugars?
= sugars with 6 carbon atoms.
What are single-sugar molecules called?
= Monosaccharides
= E.g: Glucose, Galactose, Fructose.
=
What is the first property of Monosaccharides?
= soluble in water + hydrophilic.
= contains large amount of OH groups- hydroxyln groups
= form hydrogen bonds with water molecules
What does hydrophilic mean?
= dissolve in water
= water loving.
What are Monosaccharides with 5 carbon atoms called?
= Pentose.
E/g: Ribose.
What are polysacharides or dissacharides?
= Monosacharides can be chemically joined together to form larger carbonhydrates.
What is the formula for carbonhydrates?
cnH2on
