Biological Molecules: Triglycerides Flashcards
What is the first function of lipids?
= energy source + store energy
= E.g: butter and oil.
= e.g: adipose tissue in humans under skin- reduces heat lost to the environment (insulation) + found in internal organs to protect organs
What is the second function of lipids?
= used for water proofing.
= e.g: oils that coat organisms.
What is the third function of lipids?
= major part in structure of membranes
= e.g: mitochondria
=
What are the 2 categories of lipids?
= Triglycerides
= Phospholipid.
What is the structure of triglycerides?
= contains a molecule of glyceroel.
= bonded to 3 fatty acids.
What is the structure of fatty acids?
= end carboxylic group
= long chain of carbon atoms bonded to hydrogen.
What is a saturated fatty acid?
= Single covalent bonds between the carbon atoms.
What is an unsaturated fatty acid?
= at least 2 double covalent bond between carbon atoms.
What is an Monounsaturated fatty acid and polyunsturated>
= 1 covalent bond only.
= two covalent bond.
What does a glyceroel molecule contain?
= 3 hydroxyl groups
What bond does fatty acids and glyceroel make and what is the process called?
= ester bond
= Esterification (condensation).
= forms 3 water molecules.
What do Lipase enzymes do?
= break the ester bonds releasing glyceroel and and fatty acid
= hydrolosis.
What is the first property of triglycerides?
= non-polar molecules
= insoulable in water
= used for water proofing.
What is the second property of triglycerides?
= as they have large amouns of hydrogen and carbon atoms- great deal of energy can be released.
