Cell Division: Cell division by mitosis Flashcards
What happens in mitosis?
starts with a diploid cell- chromosomes are in pairs
= ends with 2 geneitcally identical daughter cells, diploid cells
What are the reasons for mitosis?
= growth repair
= when we want identical copies of a cell
= asexual reproduction
What are the 2 main stages of the cell cycle?
= interphase
= m mitotic phase
What happens during interphase?
= energy stores increases
= cell grows in size
= organelles are replicated
=DNA copied
What are the 2 processes that take place in the mitotic stage?
= nucleus divides into 2 daughter nuclei- mitosis
= cell divides into 2 daughter cells each with a nucleus- cytokenesis
Can we see the chrosomes in the nucleus in interphase?
= no- not visible
= instead we see chromatin
= chromosomes have a loose, open structure
= DNA is acessible for transcription and replication
What is DNA replication like?
= during interphase chrosomes are replicated
= 2 identical molecules of DNA- sister chromatids
= point where they are joined- centromere
= process happens for every chromosome
