Cell Division By Meisosis Flashcards
Where does meiosis only take place?
= sex orgams
= produces gametes
What is the summary of what we start and end with?
= start diploid cell
= ends with 4 haploid gametes, as when fertilisation happens with 2 gametes this forms a zygote diploid cell
Are the 4 daughter cells in meosis geneticallt identical or varied?
=genetically varied
What are a homologous pair of chromosomes?
= pair of chromosomes
= one of the chromosome comes from the father
= one of the chromosome comes from the mother
= have the exact same gene, inherit different alleles from the parent
= `
Why are the gamates produced in meiosis genetically different? (crossing over)
= all the chromosomes are copied, sister chromatids joined by the centromere
= the 2 chromosomes in homologous pair join together and the chromatids wrap around eachother
=parts of the chromatids can break off and and exchange between homolgous chromosomes
= exhanged DNA
= recombinent chromsoomes
What are the attached pair of chromosomes called?
bivalent
What are the points where the chromatids joined together?
= chiasmata
What else can happen during crossing over?
= exchanging alleles
What then causes the genetic variation?
= exchange of alleles
