Structure and gas exchange in a leaf: Flashcards
What do gaurd cells do?
= creates the spore, stomata where gas exchange happens
What are the spongy mesophyl?
= air spaces
= allowing gases to pass through/diffuse
= maintain a concentration gradient
=
What does paliside mesiphul do?
= where photosynthesis occurs
= closer to the top and requires direct sunlight
= has chlorophyll, chloroplast, maximises light absorbption for phosoythesis
What is gas exchange at the stomata?
= oxuge diffuses out
= co2 diffuses in
= to reduce water loss by evporation stomata close at night where phosoytnesis does not occu
How are plants adapyted tp reduce water loss?
= xerophytic plants
= structural features to enable efficient gas exxchabge to occur to limit water loss
= curled leaves- trap moisture to increase humudity
= hairs to trap moisture
= sunken stomata to trap mpisture
= thicker cuticle to reduce aevpoation
= longer root network to reach more water
How is water loss reduced?
= stomata closes at night
= when photosynthesis isnt occuring
=
