HIV: Flashcards
What is HIV?
= human immunodeffiency virus
= leads to developement of aids
=
How does HIV work?
= inserts viral RNA + enzyme (reversal transcriptase) into a cell
= converts HIV RNA into HIV DNA with the target cell
= HIV DNA can form new HIV molecules leads to spreading
When does the development of aids happens?
= enough damage to t-cells
= due to lack of healthy t-helper cells individuals suffering from aids can develop infections and cancers
What is HIV made from?
= lipid membrane
= attachment proteins
= reverse transcriptase
= capsid
Why are antibiotics not effective agaisnt hiv?
= many antibiotics work by preventing bacteria from making cell walls
= viruses do not have cell walls and reproduce inside of a host cel
=
What can be used to treat HIV?
= antiretrovial drugs
= keeps level of PH in blood stream lpw
= reduces effect on hosts immune system
