short term long term / types of long term memory Flashcards
Short-Term Memory (STM): Multiple?
There is some evidence from neuropsychology that there is more than one type of STM. Shallice and Warrington found that KF (client of the study) suffered from amnesia and was poor with digits that he read out to himself (auditory) but better when he read the digits to himself (visual). This proves that the STM is not unitary. It proves that the Multi-Store Memory model is wrong in claiming there is just one STM store processing different types of information.
Tulving (1985) thought that the Multi-Store Model of memory must be too simplistic. He modified the MSM view of LTM to include:
- Episodic memory
- Semantic memory
- Procedural memory
Episodic Memory
This is a long-term memory store for personal events:
1. Memories are ‘time stamped’.
2. People, objects, places and behaviors involved in memory.
3. Conscious effort is required to recall episodic memories.
Semantic Memory
A store for our knowledge of the world:
1. These memories are not ‘time stamped’.
2. Knowledge of facts and complex emotions such as the meaning of love.
