Q

Plasticity

A

the describes the brains tendency to change and adapt as a result of experience and new learning. This generally involves the growth of new connections

Q

Functional recovery

A

a form of plasticity following damage through trauma, brains ability to redustrubute or transfer functions usually preformed by a damaged areas to others

Q

Research into plasticity first one

A

Maguire et al 2000 studied the brains of London taxi drives and found significantly more volume of grey matter in the posterior hippocampus than in a matched control group

Q

Research into plasticity second one

A

Bogdan draganski et al 2006 who imaged the brains of medical students three months before and after their final exam. Learning induced changes were seen to have occurred in the posterior hippocampus and the parietal cortex presumably as a result of learning

Q

After brain trauma

A

Unaffected areas of the brain are often able to adapt and compensate for those areas that are damaged. Functional record that happens after is a form of neural plasticity
Nureoscentists suggest that this process can occur quickly after trauma and then slow down after sever weeks or months. Then requires rehabilitation to further recovery
