experiments Flashcards
Laboratory experiment:
An experiment carried out in a controlled environment
Here extraneous variables can be controlled for especially situational variable
Does not nessically mean it took place in a lab just a controlled place
Field experiment:
The experiment takes place in the participants own natural environment but the researcher still manipulates the independent variables
Filed doesn’t mean filed but a place where you would usually expect that behaviour
Natural experiments
the experimenter does not directly manipulate IV.
there is no manipulation of groups and they existed irrespective of whether the investigator chose to examine them.
In quasi experiments
however the groups exists naturally but it is the experimenter who decided to investigate them
strengths of field experiments
Higher ecological validity
strengths of laboratory experiment
Higher ability to replicate
Control over extraneous variables meaning higher ability to conclude cause and effect
weakness of labtoatroy experiment
Low ecological validity
weakness of field experiment
Lower ability to replicate
Lower Control over extraneous variables meaning lower ability to conclude cause and effect
strength of a natural experiment
High ecocogical validity
Able to undertake research that would otherwise be impractical or unethical
Weakness of natural experiment
Conditions may be rare
Lack of control
strengths of quasi experiment
Often more controlled than natural experiments
More practical and ethical than studying certain things than true experiments
weakness of quasi experiment
Lack of control compared to ‘true’ experiments
Internal validity
extent to which we can say that it was iv causes the effect on dv
Ecological validity
extent to which the setting of an investigation mirrors the real world situation where the behaviour of interest would be found
