pscodyamic approach questions from the book Flashcards
To prevent itself from being overwhelmed by excessive demands from the Id and Superego, the Ego relies on
Defense mechanisms
The following are features of the psychodynamic approach.
The structure of personality.
The unconscious.
Give a brief outline of each feature. Briefly explain how each of these features might influence human behaviour. (4 marks)
The unconscious is a vast storehouse of biological drives and instincts that has a significant influence on our behaviour and personality. It might influence behaviour on our views of people/reality as it contains thwarting and disturbing memories that have been locked away.
The structure of personality is a tripartite composed of three parts - the id, the ego and the superego. The id drives us to sasfity selfish wants
The ego rationally, balancing the ID and the superego
The superego - concerned with keeping to moral norms
Psychodynamic apporach
a prespective that describes the different forces most of which are unconscious that operate on the mind an direct human behaviour and experience
The unconscious
the part of the mind that we are unaware of but which directs much of our behvaiour
Id
inertly unconscious the id is made up of selfish aggressive instincts that demand immediate gratification
Ego
the reality check that balances the conflicting demand of the id and the superego
Defence mechnims
unconscious strategies that the ego uses to manage the conflict between the id and the superego
Psychosexual stages
five development stages that all children pass through. At each stage there is a different conflict the outcome of which determines future development
Repression
forcing a distressing memory out of the conscious mind
Denial
refusing to acknowledge some aspect of reality
Displacement
transferring feelings from true source of distressing emotion onto a substitute target
Identify and discuss one limitation of the psychodynamic approach in psychology. (4 marks)
Untestable conceceptys
One limitation of the psycodynamiuc approach is that much of it is untestable. Oral popper argued that the pscyodynmaic approach does not meet the scientific criterion of falsification. It is not open to empirical testing. Many of freud concepts lie/occur at an unconscious level making them difficult to test
furthermore his ideas were based on subjective study of single indiuvals such as little Hans which makes it diffuse to make universal calms about human behaviour
This suggest that freud theory was pseudoscientific rather than established fact
Identify and discuss one strength of the psychodynamic approach in psychology. (4 marks)
Real world application introduced the idea of pscyothearpy. A new form of therapy pscyanylais. The first attpmety to treat mental disorder psychologically rather than physically. Employed a range of techniques to access the unconscious such as dream aanyalis. Helps bring repressed emotions into their conscious kind so they can be dealt with. It is the forerunner to many modern day talking therapies such as consulting that have since been established. This shows the value of the approach as it lea dot the creation of a new approach to treatment
What is a technique to acces the unconscious
Dream analysis
What are the untestable concepts in the pscycodynamic approach?
The id and the oedipus complex
