key terms Flashcards
Operationalisation
clearly defining variables in terms of how they are measured
independent variable
I change
Dependent variable
you don’t change
Directional hypotheses
states the direction of difference or relationship (people who drink energy drinks become more talkative than people who don’t
Non - directional:
does not state the direction( people who prefer energy drink differ in talkative.
Extraneous variables:
all variables that are not in the independent variable that could influence the result such as the temperature of a room
Confounding variables
any variables that may have affected DV so we cannot be sure of the true source of the changes to DV. They do systematically change with the IV
Investigator effect
any effect of the investigation behaviour (conscious or uncouncios) on the research outcome (the DV). This may include everything from design of study to selection and interaction with participants
Randomisation
use of chance in order to control for the effects of bias when designing materials and deciding the order of conditions
Standardisation
All participants should be subject to the same environment, information, and experience, so all procedures must be standardised
Use the same exact formalised procedures and instructions for all participants in a research study
Mere exposure effect
when repeatedly exposed to a stimulus, the mere exposure affect implies that if given the choice, participants will prefer to see that repeated stimulus
internal validity:
control variables, things inside a research study
External validity
things outside a research study
how does it apply to real life
Conformity:
A change in a persons behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
Obedience
following given a direct order giving to you by an authority figure
