comparison of approaches book questions Flashcards
Explain one way in which social learning theory overlaps with the cognitive approach in psychology. (2 marks)
One way that the social learning theory overlaps with the cognitive approach is that they both use scientific controlled lab experiments with humans. The cognitive approach uses this to infer mental process about humans while the social learning theory uses this to observe behaviour.
Explain one similarity between the behaviourist approach and the cognitive approach. (2 marks)
One way that the social learning theory overlaps with the behaviourist approach is that they both use scientific controlled lab experiments with humans to observe behaviour.
Outline one similarity between the biological and behaviourist approaches in psychology. (2 marks)
They are both determinism in their views on what causes behaviour. The behaviourist approach is determinist in its view as it believes past conditioning experiences is what determines behaviour and that free will is an illusion. While the biological view is determinist in the way that it believes are accountings are governed by genetic causes and biological structures
Outline one difference between the biological and behaviourist approaches in psychology. (2 marks)
One difference between the biological and behaviourist approach is that the biological approach takes the nature debate which is that behaviour is controlled by evolution genetic factors etc while the behaviourism approach takes the nature debate that behaviour is learnt through stimulus and response along with reinforcement
Outline two ways in which the biological and psychodynamic approaches in psychology are similar. (4 marks)
The first way in which they are similar is the psychodynamic and biological approach both have real world application in their use in treating mental disorder. The biological approach have lead to the creation of drugs to help whereas the psychodynamic approach has lead to the creation of the psycoanylis therapy which helps them.
Another way they are similar is that the biological approach argues that behaviour is derived from a genetic blueprint which is similar for the pscyodynamic approach as freud though that much of our behaviour was driven by biological drives and instincts
Psychodynamic apporach nature or nature
contonins nomothetic elects such as the structure of personality but also recognises all human as unique products of multiple influences therefore dies not propose general explanations for specific experiences
Humanistic nature or nature
very idiographic as it is considers everyone to be unique although it could be argued that elemensts such as the hierarchy of needs apply to all people so it is not entirely ideographic
psyvodynmaic approach over other approaches
Good explanatory power
- Good at explaining the root causes of behaviour.
- Well suited to explaining real-life situations and thus applicable to all our lives.
- Other approaches are difficult to apply to everyday life.
