Neck - Part 4 Flashcards
T4
Thyroxine
What is the normal range for thyroxine?
4.5-12ug/dL
What does T4 do?
Stimulates consumption of oxygen
What is thyroxine secreted by?
Follicular cells of the thyroid
What is T4 controlled by?
Thyrotropin
- TSH
What amount of iodine needs to be ingested per week for normal thyroxine production?
100-200mg
What is decrease of T4 associated with? (2)
- Thyroid disease
2. Nonfunctioning pituitary gland
T3
Triiodothyronine
What is the normal range for triiodothyronine?
70-190ng/dL
What does T3 do?
Regulates tissue metabolism
What is decreased amounts of triiodothyronine associated with?
Hashimoto thyroiditis
What is the normal range for calcitonin?
< 100pg/mL
What does calcitonin do?
Lowers calcium and phosphorus concentration in the blood
What does calcitonin inhibit?
Bone resorption
What is calcitonin secreted by?
Parafollicular cells
- C-cells of the thyroid gland
What is elevated amounts of calcitonin associated with?
Medullary thyroid carcinoma
What are decrease levels of calcitonin associated with? (2)
- Surgical removal of the thyroid glands
2. Nonfunctioning thyroid glands
PTH
Parathormone
- parathyroid hormone
What is the normal range of parathormone?
12-68pg/mL
What does PTH do?
Regulates calcium metabolism in conjunction with calcitonin
Why is parathormone released in response to?
To low extracellular concentration of free calcium
What is elevation of PTH associated with?
Hyperparathyroidism
What is the normal range of calcium?
8.5-10.5mg/dL
What does calcium aid in?
The transportation of nutrients through the cell membranes
What is elevation of calcium associated with? (3)
- hyperparathyroidism
- Hyperthyroidism
- Malignancy
What levels of calcium is considered life threatening?
14.5mg/dL
What are decrease levels of calcium associated with? (2)
- Nonfunctioning parathyroid glands
2. Surgical removal of the parathyroid glands
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperactivity of the thyroid gland
What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism? (9)
- Nervousness
- Exophthalmos
- Tremors
- Constant hunger
- Weight loss
- Heat intolerance
- Palpitations
- Increased heart rate
- Diarrhea
What are the causes of hyperthyroidism? (3)
- Toxic adenoma
- Graves disease
- Trophoblastic tumours
What can happen if hyperthyroidism goes untreated?
May lead to cardiac failure
What is the percentage of thyroid nodules that are benign?
60%
What is the percentage of thyroid nodules that are cysts?
20%
What is the percentage of thyroid nodules that are malignant?
20%
