A

A

Economic Embargo ordered by Thomas Jefferson on all sea trade—ordered all ships to stay in port. A result of continuous harassment from France and Britain, impressment. Too weak to fight a war, intending to starve British. Chesapeake Leopard Affair an inciting incident

What Whiskey Rebellion

A

Issue due to Hamilton’s Report on Public Credit, the taxing of commodities such as whiskey. Essential for trade and survival of these people, who couldn’t pay these taxes. They revolted, Washington responded with force leading thousands of militia men to put down revolt, no violence occurred. Tax remained until 1802.

A

Could be used as advice for rising leaders to watch who bears the burden of new taxes, showed US was able to suppress violent rebellion with military, and played a role in development of political parties.

What Alien and Sedition Acts

A

Laws made with intent to weaken DR.
Alien: European immigrants are welcomed into Jeffersonians, so President was given ability to arrest and deport any who criticized federal government.
Sedition: heavy fines and jail sentences for anyone who defames government officials or speaks out against the government
