AP Bio Chapter 45 Part 2 Flashcards
(11 cards)
Vibrio fisheri
Bacterium that lives in organisms in marine animals, when population density hits a threshold, they begin to produce a light-producing protein, which gives them bioluminescence
Quorum sensing
How unicellular organisms communicate chemically w one mother. Communication among microbes that triggers group response once particular population densities are released.
Biofilms
Bacterial ecosystems that are established and maintained due to elaborate quorum sensing networks.
Apoptosis
Programmed cell death, programmed because of the sugnals pathways that it is programmed to
Death proteins are present where and what state
In every cell inactive form prior to signal reception
What does amplifying a message mean
One signal molecule (ligand) could release millions of another molecule
Membrane receptors are used by what type of molecules
A hydrophilic ligand, water soluble and polar.
Describe the process a hydrophobic molecule takes
Goes straight through the plasma membrane, binds to a receptor molecule in the cytoplasm, this complex goes into the DNA, and can either turn a gene on or off or start making a protein or stop making a protein
Ligand can be diffusable through
Cellular junctions
Positive feedback definition
A form in regulation in which an end production of a process speeds up that process
Negative feedback definition
A form of regulation in which an accumulation of the end product in that process slows down the process
