Propelled to Republican nomination in 1860
Dred Scott (1857)
Missouri Slave
Master brought Scott from slave state MO to free Ill to free Wisconsin. Develops into famous court case (Scott. V. Sandford 1877)
After Scott sues for freedom, Supreme Court decided:
1. Slaves aren’t citizens (“property”)
2. Congress cannot ban slavery (MO Comp unconstitutional) can’t tell you what you own
SPARKS CIVIL WAR northerners unhappy with banishment of MO Comp, southerners happy
