मासेकालवृष्टिसमाहतासौम्यवातकम्पिततनुः
(1)

A

JUST EMEND THE TEXT TO:
कदाचिन्मासे कालवृष्टिसमाहतो सौम्यवातकम्पिततनुः
\I THINK THE INITIAL ENTRY BELOW IS BASICALLY RIGHT. THE EQUIVALENT शीत (SINCE समाहतासौम्यवात HERE SEEMS = शीतवातहत 4 LINES BELOW) PROVES WE DEFINITELY HAVE सौम्य AND NOT असौम्य HERE - SO THE FINAL LONG -A IN *समाहता IS A REAL PROBLEM. MAYBE ALUKSAMASA FEMININE WITH तनु AT THE END EVEN THOUGH THIS WHOLE CPD IS MASCULINE WITH “APE”? IT’S EITHER THAT OR A THE TEXT IS BAD HERE.
NOTE: THE TEXT HERE WOULD BE FINE IF THE MONKEY WERE FEMALE. ONE WOULD JUST SPLIT THE COMPOUND AFTER समाहता AND EVERYTHING WOULD WORK. BUT THE TEXT CONTINUES WITH कश्चिद्वानरस् - CLEARLY A MALE MONKEY.
NOTE ALSO THAT कालवृष्टि CANNOT MEAN ‘rainy season’. INSTEAD REMEMBER THAT काल CAN MEAN काल a. (-ली f.) 1 Black, of a dark or dark-blue colour; Rām.5.17.9. Mb.8.49.48. -2 Injuring, hurting. -
SO HERE कालवृष्टि == ‘injurious or dark rain’
\
vṛṣṭiḥ वृष्टिः f. [वृष्-क्तिन्] 1 Rain, a shower of rain; आदित्या- ज्जायते वृष्टिर्वृष्टेरन्नं ततः प्रजाः Ms.3.76. -2 A shower (of anything); अस्त्रवृष्टि R.3.58; पुष्पवृष्टि 2.6; so शर˚, धन˚, उपल˚ &c. -Comp. -कालः the rainy season. -घ्नी small cardamoms. -जीवन a. nourished or watered by rain (as a country); cf. देवमातृक. (-नः) the Chātaka bird. -पातः a shower of rain. -भूः a frog. -संपातः a shower of rain.
\
MY ORIGINAL COMMENTS FOLLOW:
मासेकालवृष्टिसमाहतासौम्यवातकम्पिततनुः
(?) THIS IS SPELLED IN B&K AS BEING ALL ONE LONG COMPOUND – AND JHA HAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TEXT. I AM NOT EXACTLY SURE HOW TO PARSE/RENDER IT.
\
THE FIRST ELEMENT मासे APPEARS TO BE LOC “in the/a month”, SO EITHER IT SHOULD HAVE A SPACE AFTER IT AS A SEPARATE WORD OR IT IS ALUKSAMASA. B&K OFFER THE NOTE: कदाचित् = कस्मिंश्चित् SO MAYBE, YES, TAKE कदाचित् (=कस्मिंश्चित् ) मासे AS SEPARATE FROM THE LARGE COMPOUND HERE IN SPITE OF THE ORTHOGRAPHY.
\
“(In-a-month)+(time)+(rain)+(struck
)+(cold/wet)+(wind)+(bent/bowed)+(bodied)” (?)
\
*समाहता WHY LONG -A AT THE END? MAYBE ALUKSAMASA FEMININE WITH तनु AT THE END EVEN THOUGH THIS WHOLE CPD IS MASCULINE WITH “APE”? I DON’T THINK IT IS असौम्य mfn. unlovely, disagreeable, displeasing SINCE सौम्य (THE USUAL WORD IN THIS KIND OF STORY) CAN MEAN -7 Cool, moist. AS WELL AS ‘pleasant’ BUT असौम्य CANNOT. MAYBE IT DOES JUST MEAN “unpleasant wind” HERE, BUT THAT IS WEAKER.
\
ALSO, समाहतासौम्यवात HERE SEEMS = शीतवातहत 4 LINES BELOW, BUT HERE THE PARTICIPLE COMES FIRST (WHICH IS VERY ODD)
\
I THINK THE TEXT IS BAD HERE. NO NOTE/HELP FROM B&K AT THIS POINT.

PUT WORD BREAK AFTER
कदाचिन्मासे (=कस्मिंश्चिन्मासे) , THEN IT IS NOT SO BAD:
“In a certain month (कदाचिन्मासे (=कस्मिंश्चिन्मासे) ) [a monkey] untimely rain (ऽकालवृष्टि) struck* (समाहता *) cold/wet-wind (सौम्यवात) bent-bodied (कम्पिततनुः)…’
*समाहता WHY LONG -A AT THE END? MAYBE ALUKSAMASA FEMININE WITH तनु AT THE END EVEN THOUGH THIS WHOLE CPD IS MASCULINE WITH “APE”?
