Urinary pt 3 Flashcards
What is afferent arteriole?
Blood goes into the renal corpuscle and starts to filter blood plasma
Blood flow through the kidney
Blood delivered to each kidney by renal artery -> branch into Segmental arteries -> branch into interlobular arteries -> branch to form arcuate arteries -> branch to become interlobular arteries
What is efferent arteriole?
Blood leaving the glomerulus and branches into peritubular capillaries or vasa recta
What are peritubular capillaries?
Intertwined around PCT and DCT and mostly in cortex of kidney
What are interlobular veins?
Smallest veins, travel alongside interlobular arteries
What are arcuate veins?
Form from merged interlobular veins at base of medullary pyramids
What are interlobar veins?
Form from merged arcuate veins, extend through renal columns and travel through renal vein
Filtration membrane characteristics
Porous, thin, negatively charged structures and formed by glomerulus and visceral layer of glomerular capsule
What is endothelium of glomerulus?
Fenestrated, allows plasma and dissolved substances to pass easily and restricts passages of large structure
What is basement membrane of glomerulus?
Contains glycoprotein and proteoglycan molecules that restrict large plasma proteins from passing
What is visceral layer of glomerular capsule?
Outermost layer wrapping around glomerular capillaries
What are podocytes?
Composed of specialized cells that restrict passes in the visceral layer
What are pedicels?
Have long processes that support capillary wall
What are filtration slits?
Separated by thin spaces and restrict passage of most small proteins
What are mesangial cells?
Specialized cells positioned between glomerular capillary loops
