anatomy ch 15 ANS Flashcards
What is somatic sensory?
Detects signals from special senses and from skin and proprioceptors
What is somatic motor?
Sends signals from CNS to skeletal muscles
ANS is only what?
Motor
What does ANS do?
Transmits signals from CNS to smoot muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands
What is the function of ANS?
Maintaining homeostasis
Where is preganglionic neuron located?
Cell body within brainstem or spinal cord
Where is postganglionic neuron located?
Cell body within autonomic ganglion
What do branches of axon do?
Talk to parts of your body very quickly for everything to react at once.
What does hypothalamus do in ANS?
Integrates and command center for ANS; involved in emotions
What does brainstem do in ANS?
Contains major ANS reflex centers
What does spinal cord do in ANS?
Contains ANS reflex centers for defecation and urination
Parasympathetic division
Rest and digest, homeostasis, conserving energy, replenishing nutrients
Sympathetic division
Fight or flight, exercise, excitement, emergency
What division is parasympathetic?
Craniosacral
Preganglionic axons in parasympathetic are what?
Long; few branches
Postganglionic axons in parasympathetic are what?
Short
What division is sympathetic?
Thoracolumbar
Preganglionic axons in sympathetic are what?
Short; many branches
Postganglionic axons in sympathetic are what?
Long
What does mass activation do?
Talk to a lot of places at once
What does adrenal medulla do?
Keeps you in fight or flight
Where are terminal ganglia located?
Close to effector organ
Where are intramural ganglia located?
Within the organ itself
What are the 4 cranial nerves of parasympathetic?
Oculomotor, facial, glossopharyngeal, vagus
What does the oculomotor nerve do?
Postganglionic axons control ciliary muscles and pupil constriction.
What does facial nerve do?
Postganglionic axons control lacrimal glands and salivary glands.
What does vagus nerve do?
Communicate with the Brain-> thoracic -> abdomen
In the sympathetic division ganglia is what?
Close to CNS
What are sympathetic preganglionic neurons?
Cell bodies housed in lateral horn T1-L2
What’s important with the cervical ganglion?
Thoracic viscera
What are white rami communicantes?
Myelinated Preganglionic axons and onto trunk
What are gray rami communicantes?
Unmyelinated postganglionic and off trunk
What is included in the prevertebral ganglia?
Celiac, superior mesenteric, and inferior mesenteric ganglia
What’s in the celiac ganglia?
Stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, pancreas
What’s in the superior mesenteric ganglia?
Small intestine, large intestine, pancreas, kidney, ureters
