spinal cord Flashcards
What are the 4 parts of the spinal cord?
Cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral
What is cauda equina?
Spinal nerve roots extend inferiorly from the end of the spinal cord
What is cervical enlargement?
Neurons innervating upper limbs
What is lumbar enlargement?
Neurons innervating lower limbs
What is a nerve?
Bundle of axons inside PNS
What does posterior root contain?
Sensory neurons
What does posterior root ganglion contain?
Cell bodies of these neurons
What does anterior root contain?
Motor neurons
What is vertebral column?
Houses the spinal cord
What is the intervertebral foramen?
Each spinal nerve exits through this.
What are the 3 spinal cord meninges?
Pia mater, arachnoid mater, and dura mater
What is pia mater?
Delicate layer adhering to spinal cord
What is arachnoid mater?
Web-like layer, external to pia
What is dura mater?
Tough, outermost layer
What is gray matter made of?
Neuron cell bodies, dendrites, unmyelinated axons, and glial cells.
What is posterior horns?
House axons of sensory neurons and cell bodies of interneurons
What are anterior horns?
House cell bodies of somatic motor neurons
What are lateral horns?
House cell bodies of autonomic motor neurons
What does somatic motor contain?
Skeletal muscle
What does somatic sensory contain?
Skeletal muscles, joints, skin
What does visceral motor contain?
Cardiac muscles, smooth muscles, and glands
What does visceral sensory contain?
Cardiac muscles, smooth muscles, and glands
What is central canal?
Horizontal band of gray matter
What are nuclei?
Groups of cell bodies in the CNS
What is white matter (Tract)?
Myelinated axons to and from the brain
What is posterior funiculus?
Sits on top of white matter and contains sensory tracts.
What is lateral funiculus?
Sits on lateral sides of spinal cord and has sensory and motor tracts
What is anterior funiculus?
Sits below white matter and contains sensory and motor tracts.
