ch. 9 part 1 anatomy Flashcards
What is joints (articulations)?
Places of contact between bones, bones and cartilage, or bones and teeth
How are joints classified?
Structure and function
What are the 3 types of structural classes of joints?
Fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial joints
What are fibrous joints?
Bones held together by dense CT, no cavity
What are cartilaginous joints?
Bones joined by cartilage hyaline/fibro, no cavity
What are synovial joints?
Bones joined by ligaments with fluid-filled joint cavity separating bone surface
What are the 3 functional classes of joints?
Synarthroses, amphiarthroses, and diarthroses
What are synarthroses?
Immobile joints; fibrous or cartilaginous joints
What are amphiarthroses?
Slightly mobile joints; fibrous or cartilaginous joints
What are diarthroses?
Freely mobile joints; synovial joints
If mobility moves up
Stability goes down
Characteristics of fibrous joints
No joint cavity, connected by dense regular CT, immobile or slightly mobile
What are the types of fibrous joints?
Gomphoses, sutures, and syndesmoses
What is gomphoses?
How your teeth fit into your socket; immobile
What is sutures?
Found between some skull bones; increase strength and decrease risk of fracture
