ch. 7 part 7 hormones Flashcards
What are hormones?
Chemical messengers that release from one cell into the blood
What are growth hormones?
Both directly stimulate growth of cartilage in epiphyseal plate
What are thyroid hormones?
Regulates normal activity at epiphyseal plate
What are sex hormones?
Triggered at puberty; increases rate of cartilage growth and bone formation in epiphyseal plate
What are glucocorticoids?
Regulate blood glucose level and high amounts increase bone loss
What is serotonin?
Role in rate and regulation of normal bone remodeling
What happens if serotonin levels are too high?
Osteoprogenitor cells are prevented from differentiating into osteoblasts
What are the two primary hormones regulating blood calcium?
Calcitriol and parathyroid hormone
PTH and calcitriol interact with bone
Act synergistically to increase release of calcium from the bone into the blood by increasing osteoclast activity
What is calcitonin?
Aids in regulating blood calcium levels; inhibits osteoclast activity
