Special senses: Equilibrium Flashcards
Cochlea - cross section
Vibration comes through and influences the cochlear duct, and the hair cells get bent and influence the vibration and have it gone out the round window
At rest what happens with ions?
About 10% of ion channels are open and no sound is present
Sound travels at
331 m/sec
Frequency (hertz)
Pitch, quality, intensity
Where do we have magnification
Ossicles
What is amplitude?
Loud and soft sounds
What are static senses?
Sense position of head; maintain stability and posture when head is still (side to side)
What are dynamic senses?
Sudden movement or rotation of head; aid in maintaining balance
What is vestibule?
Fluid filled, bony chamber, equilibrium receptors
Saccule is important for what?
Vertical movements
Utricle is important for what?
Horizontal movements
What is ampulla?
Houses sensory organs
What is crista ampularis contain?
A number of sensory hair cells and supporting cells
What is hearing loss?
Due to disease, damage or age related
What is conduction deafness?
Prevention or blocking sounds from entering inner ear
What is sensoneural deafness?
Damage to the neural structures
What is tinnitus?
Ringing or clicking sound in the absence of auditory stimuli
What is menieres syndrome?
Labyrinth disorder; effects both hearing and balance
What is the weber test?
Ring tuning fork and place on center of head to hear in both ears
What is the Rinne test?
Place tuning fork on the bone behind ear and move away till they can’t hear it
What is the Bing test?
Same as Rinne except close the other ear canal
What is sound location?
Move tuning fork around and have patient detect location
What is postural reflex test?
Unexpected changes that move the body away from a state of balance
What is Barany test?
Tests visual response to changes in dynamic equilibrium; spinning in a chair and seeing their eyes twitch
What is the Romberg test?
Tests static equilibrium by standing with back to the wall
