ch 10 pt 8 anatomy Flashcards
What is muscle fatigue?
Reduced ability to produce muscle tension
What is hypertrophy?
Muscle increases in size
What is atrophy?
Muscle decreases in size
What is fibrosis?
Muscle mass often replaced by dense regular CT, decrease flexibility
What is intercalated discs do?
Make sure cardiac cells are communicating with each other
What is needed for contraction?
Ca2+ channels
What is dense bodies?
Points where intermediate filaments interact within sarcoplasm
What is dense plaques?
Points where intermediate filaments attach on inner sarcolemma
What is contractile proteins of smooth muscles?
Contraction causes a twisting motion
Where can contraction occur in smooth muscles?
Across filament, anywhere
What is latchbridge mechanism?
Myosin attaches to actin for extended time without using extra ATP
What is calmodulin?
Protein that binds Ca2+ to trigger contraction
What is myosin light-chain kinase?
Enzyme that carries phosphate from ATP to bind to myosin head
What is myosin light-chain phosphate?
Enzyme that takes phosphate away from myosin head
