ch 18 pt 2 anatomy Flashcards
What does leukocytes (white blood cells) do?
Defend against pathogens (infection)
Blood pH
7.35-7.45
What does water like to do?
Follow proteins
How do we get body temp?
Blood absorbs heat from body cells
Oxygen-rich blood is
Bright red
Oxygen-poor blood is
Dark red
Volume of blood
5 liters
What is the viscosity?
Blood is 4-5 times thicker than water for resistance to flow
Viscosity increases if
Erythrocyte number increases or amount of fluid decreases
What is plasma concentration?
Determines the direction of osmosis across capillary walls
Whole blood separated is
Erythrocytes (most dense), buffy coat, plasma (least dense)
What is in the buffy coat?
Leukocytes and platelets
What is hematocrit?
Percentage of volume of all formed elements (45%)
Why don’t red blood cells have nucleus?
To carry oxygen
Why is plasma an extracellular fluid?
It is outside the cell
What is colloid?
Plasma contains dispersed proteins
What is colloid osmotic pressure?
Prevents loss of fluid from blood to help maintain blood volume and pressure
