What are the 3 types of arteries?
Elastic arteries, muscular arteries, arterioles
What are elastic (conducting) arteries?
Largest; Conduct blood from heart to muscular arteries
Where is elastic arteries located?
Aorta and pulmonary trunk
What is muscular (distributing) arteries?
Medium; distribute blood to specific body region
Internal elastic lamina
Between tunica intima and tunica media
External elastic lamina
Between tunica media and tunic externa
What is arterioles?
Smallest; thin endothelium and single layer smooth muscle
What is vasomotor tone?
Regulate systemic blood pressure and blood flow
What is atherosclerosis?
Progressive disease of elastic and muscular arteries
What causes atherosclerosis?
Infection, trauma, or hypertension
What is hypercholesterolemia?
Increased cholesterol in the blood
What causes hypercholesterolemia?
Smoking and hypertension
What is angioplasty?
To expand narrowed region of artery

Part of arterial wall thins and ballons out
