ch. 7 part 8 anatomy Flashcards
First step to activating vitamin D to calcitriol
UV light converts to vitamin D3 and released into the blood; cholecalciferol
Second step to activating vitamin D to calcitriol
Vitamin D3 circulates throughout the body; converted to calcidiol by liver enzymes
Third step to activating vitamin D to calcitriol
Calcidiol circulates in the blood; converted to calcitriol by kidney enzymes
Two ways aging affects bone?
Decreased tensile strength of bone and bone loss of calcium and other minerals
What is osteopenia?
Insufficient ossification
What is osteoporosis?
Reduced bone mass sufficient to compromise normal function
What are the 4 different types of fractures?
Stress, pathologic, simple, and compound fractures
What is stress fracture?
Thin break caused by increased physical activity
What is pathologic fracture?
Occurs in bone weakened by disease
What is simple fracture?
Broken bone stays in skin
What is compound fracture?
Broken bone goes outside the skin
First step to bone healing
Fracture hematoma forms from clotted blood
Second step to bone healing
Fibrocartilaginous callus forms
Third step to bone healing
Hard callus forms
Fourth step to bone healing
Bone is remodeled
