Special senses: Hearing Flashcards
What receptor does hearing use?
Mechanical receptor
What are the 3 parts of hearing?
External, middle, inner ear
What are the 3 parts of the external ear?
Pinna, external auditory canal, tympanic membrane
Pinna (auricle) shape
Funnel-like structure
External auditory canal shape
S shaped tube
Tympanic membrane (eardrum) shape
Cone shaped
Function of Pinna (auricle)
Helps collect sound waves
Function of external auditory canal
As sound waves enter, they change the pressure on the eardrum.
Function of tympanic membrane (eardrum)
It receives sound vibrations from the extrenal ear and transmits them to the auditory ossicles.
Function of ear lobe (lobule)
Completes formation of pinna (auricle)
What is the middle ear?
Air-filled space in the temporal bone
What is the main purpose of auditory ossicles?
To amplify the force of vibrations coming in and connects the outer and inner ear
Function of auditory tube
Middle ear to pharynx; Help maintain equal pressure of both sides of eardrum
What cranial nerve is tensor tympani muscle
Trigeminal nerve; chewing
Function of malleus muscle
Handle-eardrum; Transmit/amplify vibrations to incus
Function of incus muscle
Connects malleus to stapes; Transmits/amplify vibrations to stapes
Function of stapes muscle
Base is in the oval window
Function of oval windows
Deep to stapes; Vibrates from stapes to perilymph
Function of cochlea
Hearing
Function of vestibule
Equilibrium, static/linear acceleration
Function of semicircular canal
Equilibrium, rotational acceleration
What is labyrinth?
Complex system of communicating chambers
What is osseous labyrinth
Bony canal in temporal bone
What is important of cochlear duct?
Sound is interpreted and change to action potential
What is stereocilia?
Are your sensory hair cells telling you can hear this
Sensory neurons in the cochlear branch are what cranial nerve?
Vestibulocochlear
