Ch. 7 part 6 steps of bone growth Flashcards
What cartilage is zone 1?
Resting cartilage
What cartilage is zone 2?
Proliferating cartilage
What cartilage is zone 3?
Hypertrophic cartilage
What cartilage is zone 4?
Calcified cartilage
What cartilage is zone 5?
Ossification
Main function of zone 1 in bone growth
Secures epiphysis to epiphyseal plate
Main function of zone 2 in bone growth
Chondrocytes undergo rapid mitosis division
Main function of zone 3 in bone growth
Mitosis stops and begins to hypertrophy and wear away at the columns of lacunae walls
Main function of zone 4 in bone growth
Minerals are deposited between columns of lacunae and destroys chondrocytes to harden matrix
Main function of zone 5 in bone growth
Blood vessels come in to bring osteoblasts in to lay out bone matrix
What zones occur specifially for bone growth in length
zones 2 and 3 add more length
What is bone remodeling?
Occurs from stress determined by osteocytes that communicate with osteoblasts and osteoclasts
What is wolffs law?
Increased bone mass = more mechanical stress; Decreased bone mass = less mechanical stress
What is mechanical stress?
Occurs in weight-bearing movement and exercise, required for normal bone remodeling, and detected by osteocytes
