ch 20 pt 7 Flashcards
Where are common pulse points located?
Radial and common carotid
What is venous return?
Blood to the heart depends on pressure gradient, skeletal muscle pump, and respiratory pump
What is skeletal muscle pump?
Assists venous return from limbs
What is respiratory pump?
Assists venous return in the thorax
In inspiration diaphragm contracts so
Abdominal pressure increases and thoracic pressure decreases
In expiration diaphragm relaxes so
Thoracic pressure increases and abdominal pressure decreases
What is thrombus?
Clot in a vein
What is pulmonary embolus?
Clot breaking free and lodging in pulmonary artery
What is hemorrhoids?
Due to increased abdominal pressure
What is resistance?
The friction blood encounters
What is peripheral resistance?
Resistance of blood in blood vessels
What is viscosity?
Resistance of fluid to its flow
What is vessel length?
Longer vessels create more resistance and friction occurs
What is vessel radius?
Smaller radius creates more resistance
What is laminar flow?
Different flow rate within vessel
