ch 20 pt 1 Flashcards
Order of the blood vessels
Arteries -> Arterioles -> Capillaries -> Venules -> Veins
What are the 3 layers of tunics?
Tunica intima, tunica media, tunica externa
What is lumen?
Space inside of vessel
What is tunica intima?
Innermost layer of vessel wall; simple squamous epithelium
What is tunica media?
Middle layer; smooth muscle cells with elastic fibers
Contraction causes vasoconstriction which
Narrows lumen
Relaxation causes vasodilation which
Widens lumen
What is tunica externa?
Outermost layer; areolar CT with elastic and collagen fibers
What does tunica externa do?
Helps anchor vessel to other structures
What is vasa vasorum?
Small arteries required to supply very large vessels
What is companion vessels?
Arteries and veins serving same body region
Why are arteries bigger than veins?
More resilient and resistant to changes in blood pressure
What does capillaries do?
Rapid gas and nutrient exchange
