BDEL. “Therefore sit down, father.”
ἰδού· τὴν γὰρ πρώτην δίκην καλῶ.
“Look, I am calling the first case.”
ΦΙΛ. μὴ κάλει τὴν δίκην, ὦ παῖ, ἀλλ’ ἄκουσον.
PHIL. “Don’t call the case, child, but listen.”
ΒΔΕΛ. καὶ δὴ ἀκούω.
BDEL. “Well, alright, I’m listening.”
τί λεγεις;
“What do you say?”
ἴθι, ὦ πάτερ, λέξον.
“Go on, Father, speak.”
ΦΙΛ. ποῦ εἰσιν οἱ κάδοι;
PHIL. “Where are the voting-urns?”
οὐ γὰρ δύναμαι τὴν ψῆφον θέσθαι ἄνευ τῶν κάδων, εὖ ἴσθ’ ὅτι.
“For I cannot place the vote without voting urns, know it well.”
(ἐκτρέχων ἄρχεται ὁ γέρων)
(The old man begins to run out.)
ΒΔΕΛ. (shouting after him) οὗτος, σὺ ποῖ σπεύδεις;
BDEL. “Hey you, where are you hurrying?”
ΦΙΛ. κάδων ἕνεκα ἐκτρέχω.
PHIL. I’m running out because of the urns.”
ΒΔΕΛ. μὴ ἄπιθι μηδαμῶς, ἀλλ’ ἐμοὶ πιθοῦ καὶ ἄκουσον, ὦ πάτερ.
BDEL. “Don’t go away in any way, but obey me and listen, Father.”
ΦΙΛ. (looking back over his shoulder) ἀλλ’ ὦ παῖ, δεῖ με τοὺς κάδους ζητήσαντα τὴν ψῆφον θέσθαι.
PHIL. “But, child, I must look for the voting-urns and place my vote.”
ἀλλ’ ἔασον.
“But let [me].”
(αὖθις ἄρχεται ἐκτρέχων)
(Again he begins to run out.)
ΒΔΕΛ. (points to some cups) παῦσαι ἐκτρέχων, πάτερ, ἐπειδὴ τυγχάνω ἔχων ταῦτα τὰ κυμβία.
BDEL. “Stop running out, Father, since I happen to have these cups.”
μὴ οὖν ἄπιθι.
“Do don’t go away.”
ΦΙΛ. (satisfied) καλῶς γε. πάντα γὰρ τὰ τοῦ δικαστηρίου πάρεστι—πλήν—
PHIL. “Fine! For everything of the lawcourt is here — except — ”
ΒΔΕΛ. λέξον· τὸ τί;
BDEL. “Speak; what is it?”
ΦΙΛ. — πλὴν τῆς κλεψύδρας.
PHIL. “ — except the water clock.”
ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ κλεψύδρα;
“Where is the water clock?”
ἔνεγκέ μοι.
“Bring it to me.”
ΒΔΕΛ. ἰδού.
BDEL. “Look!”
(τὴν τοῦ πατρὸς ἀμίδα δηλοῖ.)
(He shows his father’s chamber-pot.)
εἰπέ, αὕτη δὴ τίς ἐστιν;
“Speak, what is this?”
οὐχὶ κλεψύδραν ἀρίστην ἡγῇ τὴν ἀμίδα ταύτην;
“Do you not think that this chamber-pot is an excellent water clock?”
πάντα νῦν πάρεστιν.
“Everything is now here.”
(Socias enters with two dogs. One, Labes (“Grabber”) has eaten a cheese and the other dog is charging him with theft. Bdelykleon orders the courtroom cleared and asks for prayers.) κάθιζε οὖν, πάτερ, και παῦσαι φροντίζων.
“Sit down then, Father, and stop worrying.”
ἀκούσατε, παῖδες, καὶ ἐμοὶ πίθεσθε, καὶ ἐξενέγκατε τὸ πῦρ.
“Listen, slaves, and obey me, and bring out the fire.”
ὑμεῖς δὲ εὔξασθε πᾶσι τοῖς θεοῖς, εὐξάμενοι δὲ κατηγορεῖτε.
“You pray to all the gods, and after praying, prosecute.”
(ἐξενεγκόντες τὸ πῦρ ἀπέρχονται πάντες οἱ δοῦλοι, εὔχονται δὲ τοῖς θεοῖς οἱ παρόντες).
(After bringing out the fire the slaves all go away, while those present pray to the gods.)
