(He shouts to the slaves from the roof.)
ὦ Ξανθια καὶ Σωσία, καθεύδετε;
BDELYKLEON “Xanthias and Sosias, are you asleep?”
XANTHIAS “O dear, poor me!”
ΣΩΣΙΑΣ τί ἐστιν;
SOSIAS “What is it?”
XAN. “The master is no longer sleeping, but is already standing and shouting.”
ΣΩΣΙΑΣ ἀλλὰ τίσι λέγει ὁ ἀνήρ;
SOS. “But to whom is the man speaking?”
XAN. “Bdelykleon is saying something to us, as it seems to me.”
“And our master, on happening upon us sleeping, will destroy [us].”
SOS. “He seems to me to be saying something, Xanthias.”
ἀλλὰ τί βουλόμενος ἀνίστασαι, ὦ δέσποτα;
“But what makes you stand up, master?” [lit.: “wanting what are you standing up?”]
(pointing inside the house) ὅ τι;
BDEL. “What (need)?” “In theory my father is quiet, Sosias, but in practice he wants to go out.”
“And my father always uses audacity when he wants to go out.”
“But now, as it seems to me at any rate, my father, having gone into the oven, is making a hole with great zeal.”
(looking at the chimney) ἄναξ Πόσειδον, τί ποτ’ ἄρ’ ἡ κάπνη ψοφεῖ;
“Lord Poseidon, whatever noise is the chimney making?”
(Philkleon emerges from the smoke)
οὗτος τίς εἶ σύ;
“You, who are you?”
ΦΙΛΟΚΛΕΩΝ (emerging from the chimney) καπνὸς ἔγωγε ἐξέρχομαι.
PHILOKLEON “Me, I’m smoke coming out.”
BDEL. “Smoke? But you are not like smoke coming out, as it seems to me, but more like Philokleon.”
τί δέ σοι δοκεῖ, Ξανθία;
“What do you think, Xanthias?”
XAN. “He seems to me to be more like (to) no one than (to) Philokleon, master.”
(puts the cover back on the chimney)
BDEL. “Here now, look for some other scheme.”
