καὶ ὁ Εὐθύδημος, “ἀλλὰ τίς διδάσκει τοὺς μανθάνοντας,” ἔφη, “ὁ διδάσκαλος, ἢ ἄλλος τις;”
And Euthydemos said: “But who teaches those who learn, the teacher, or someone else?”
ὡμολόγει ὅτι ὁ διδάσκαλος τοὺς μανθάνοντας διδάσκει.
He agreed that the teacher teaches those who learn.
“καὶ ὅτε ὁ διδάκαλος ἐδίδασκεν ὑμᾶς παῖδας ὄντας, ὑμεῖς μαθηταὶ ἦτε;”
“And when the teacher was teaching you as children, were you pupils?”
ὡμολογει.
He agreed that they were.
“καὶ ὅτε μαθηταὶ γὰρ ὄντες, οὐδὲν ᾖστέ πω;”
“And when you were pupils, you knew nothing yet?”
“οὐ μὰ Δία. μαθηταὶ γὰρ ὄντες, οὐδὲν ᾖσμεν.”
“No, by Zeus! For since we were pupils, we knew nothing.”
“ἆρ’ οὖν σοφοὶ ἦτε, οὐκ εἰδότες οὐδέν;”
“Were you then clever, when you knew nothing?”
“οὐ δῆτα σοφοὶ ἦμεν,” ἦ δ’ ὃς ὁ Κλεινιας, “ἐπειδὴ οὐκ ᾖσμεν οὐδέν.”
“No, indeed, we were certainly not clever since we knew nothing,” said Kleinias.
“οὐκοῦν εἰ μὴ σοφοί, ἀμαθεῖς;”
“Therefore, if you were not clever, were you ignorant?”
“πάνυ γε.”
“Certainly.”
“ὑμεῖς ἄρα, μαθηταὶ ὄντες, οὐκ ᾖστε οὐδέν, ἀλλ’ ἀμαθεῖς ὄντες ἐμανθάνετε;”
“So, then, when you were pupils you knew nothing, but being ignorant you were learning?”
